Staying healthy as the weather cools...


It's noticeably darker at both ends of the day. There's a new crispness in the air. The nights are getting chillier.


Welcome to autumn and the lead in to those winter months...


This is the time of the year to be mindful of your health. As winter approaches there are some things you can do to make it easier on yourself. We have some helpful tips.





Eating well and exercising regularly are always a good start. But do you feed a fever and starve a cold? Is a flu shot really worth it? How do you avoid the slew of bugs that start to spread through friends and family at this time of year? 



• Eat seasonally. This is a great time of year for a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits that come into season in the 'fall'. Many are packed with goodness that can add nutrients to your diet. Sweet potatoes and carrots are high in anti-oxidants. While 

broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, tomatoes, and red, green, or yellow peppers are packed with Vitamin C.


• Get a good amount of sleep. Stay hydrated with lots of water and keep up moderate exercise. All great advice for any time of the year but especially so during the change of season when your body needs all the help it can get to fight off potential nasties.


• One of the best ways, and one of the most simple, of not getting infected with a cold or flu virus is to wash your hands well. We all know that germs spread with touch. That also means you should try to avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose with your hands - that will make it less likely to become contaminated with anything unpleasant your might have come across.

• Stay home when you're sick. Doing that, you've got a better chance to rest and recover - and you won't pass whatever you've got to other people.


• Get a 'flu shot. Called "the single best way to prevent the 'flu each season" by the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention, it's easy - and no, it won't give you the flu. (That's an urban myth!)


• It's not too cold to go outside. The Harvard Medical School says making time to go outdoors increases your vitamin D levels and can help you feel healthier and happier.


• Don't turn to comfort food or snacks. Ok, you might be spending more time on the couch - just don't snack while you're doing it.
